The Open Flames Light the Way with Hypnotic New Single Falling Up
London-based newcomers The Open Flames are something of a supergroup. Featuring members from Sleepy Kitten, Harvey Danger, and Say Yes, Do Nothing, the four-piece outfit debuted last year with a hugely addictive little tune called Drop a Coin. They followed that up with a classic piece of rock 'n' roll brilliance in the form of Eat Alone and then came Falling Up, a softer and more introspective offering I'd like to hone in on today.
Serving as the third single from the band's debut album Same Time Next Year, Falling Up is a hazy and highly inventive track. It sucks you into a cinematic sonic universe of reverb-drenched guitars and (eventually) seriously powerful drum work, while Dave Eastman's ruggedly heartfelt vocals bring an intensity that perfectly complements the song's dreamlike atmosphere.
Lush, layered, and deeply immersive, Falling Up washes over the listener like a wave. It's blissful in many ways - offering a much-needed escape from the noises of reality.
Released via Subjangle Records, a proudly South African label, The Open Flames' debut record is well worth a listen. It features all three of the aforementioned tunes and four other expertly crafted tracks that truly deserve your undivided attention! Onwards and upwards!
