Shimmering Pianos, Punchy Drums, and Pure Wotts Magic - Meet NOT US
At the end of last year, I proudly declared the Canadian indie-pop duo Wotts my band of the year. Consisting of producer and vocalist Jayem and bassist and guitarist Ricky 100, the pair have been churning out warm and dreamy tunes since 2021 - but last year, they became more than a crush. They became a bit of an obsession. From PETALS and Laundry to Wilson and sinking, they were the soundtrack to my days and the melody to my memories.
NOT US is the brand new offering from the duo - and it's a track that just reaffirms my love for the pair and their sonic aura. Immersive, upbeat, and, perhaps surprisingly, heavily inspired by The Police, it’s another sugary little twist on their sound, proving they’re nowhere near running out of ideas.
Short, sweet, and to the point, NOT US wastes no time in submerging the listener in a wave of shimmering piano and Stewart Copeland-inspired drum work. It's instantly infectious and filled with that signature Wotts warmth.
Serving as the first single from the duo's upcoming EP Flank!, NOT US is a song that deals with loss. Wotts have mentioned that the rest of the EP will explore similar avenues - and hope it'll be seen as a "statement piece" in their discography. As always, I can't wait to hear it!
