A Cinematic Tribute to Tradition: Discover Claudio Olachea’s Hoy Como Ayer
Embarking on a personal journey to connect his Mexican heritage with his musical identity, Los Angeles-based composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Claudio Olachea recently delivered Hoy Como Ayer. Translated into English as Today As Yesterday, Claudio's latest single is a rich and inventive instrumental offering that bridges the gap between the traditional sounds of his culture and his unique musical evolution.
Timeless, intriguing, and laced with nostalgia, Hoy Como Ayer's soul lies in the hands of a live ten-piece mariachi band and a three-piece rhythm section. What I find particularly fascinating, however, is the slow-paced tempo of the mariachi side of things. While usually known for its lively and energetic nature, here, it takes on a more reflective and cinematic quality.
"After years of writing for film and TV, I've started to see visuals in my head whenever I create music," says Claudio. "So when I was thinking about the scene I was envisioning for Hoy Como Ayer…I wanted the listener to feel like they were being transported to another time but still feel totally in the moment". Mission accomplished, as far as I'm concerned!
Recorded at Valentine Recording Studios, a place Olachea describes as "a total time capsule from the '70s," Hoy Como Ayer contains an organic richness that modern recordings often miss.
